Simeon Celebrates Disability Pride Month
June is commonly known for Pride Month, whereas July is known for Disability Pride Month to acknowledge milestones, history, and testimonials from the community.
“Disability Pride Month has been celebrated in the United States since July 1990 when the Americans with Disabilities Act came into law. Today, it is celebrated around the world, including in Canada, where 22 per cent or 6.2 million Canadians live with a disability” – Canadian Association For Supported Employment/ Association canadienne de soutien à l’emploi
The Disability Pride Flag designed by Ann Magill has gone under some revisions and now showcases the current design below.
Meaning behind each design element:
All six flag colors: Disability spans borders between nations
Black background: Mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse
Diagonal Band: Cutting across the walls and barriers that separate disabled people from society
Red Stripe: Physical disabilities
Gold Stripe: Neurodivergence
White Stripe: Invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
Blue Stripe: Psychiatric disabilities
Green Stripe: Sensory disabilities
In 2026, the chosen theme for Disability Pride Month is ‘The World Works Better With Us’. One of the many reasons our staff love to highlight the ways FIFA, International Airports, and concert venues modernize their offerings in terms of assisting those with visible and invisible accessibility needs.
If you’re based in the U.S. , The Arc has organized a list of events to commemorate Disability Pride based on the state!
